An adorable capybara pup has been born at Edinburgh Zoo — the first capybara born in Scotland in 18 years.

The tiny “babybara” arrived to first-time parents Luna and Rodney, delighting keepers who are now closely monitoring the youngster during its first crucial weeks of life.

Capybara pups typically weigh between 1.5kg and 2.5kg at birth — roughly the same as a six-pack of Irn-Bru — and zoo staff say the newborn is doing well so far.

Keepers at the zoo are giving Luna and Rodney time to rest and bond with their new arrival while carefully watching over the pup as it remains vulnerable during the early stages of development.

Antarctic penguin chicks thrive despite harsh season
Gentoo penguin chicks at Port Lockroy have survived a difficult Antarctic season and are now preparing for life at sea.

In the coming weeks, the youngster is expected to become more independent and begin grazing alongside its parents.

The capybara will also undergo its first health check soon, when keepers will determine its gender and choose a name.

The birth marks a significant moment for the zoo and animal lovers across Scotland, with visitors already excited to catch a glimpse of the country’s newest and cutest resident.
