Malawi Girls Encouraged to Join the Construction Industry

Written by Mnjiri Journalists, Malawi – Jill Dando News Centre
The National Construction Industry Council (N.C.I.C) recently visited Mnjiri C.D.S.S. to deliver a career talk aimed at inspiring more girls to pursue careers in the construction industry.
It is said that few girls apply for construction-related fields such as engineering, quantity surveying, architecture, and others.
The main purpose of the visit was to encourage more girls to consider taking N.C.I.C courses.
Triza Saka explained that the visit was intended to spark girls’ interest in construction careers.
"There are very few women and girls in fields such as civil engineering, quantity surveying, and architecture," she said. "We see more girls opting for humanities, particularly social sciences, because science subjects are often seen as more demanding. But we need to balance the number of students in science and humanities."
Patricia Mwabonga added, “We’ve found that many girls struggle with science subjects. But for someone to pursue a construction course, they must study sciences. It just takes practice. Some students even asked about dropping subjects like physics, but physics is essential. As I said earlier, practice makes perfect.”
Margret Nkosi, an architect, also shared her experience:
“When I was in high school, I didn’t know what course to take. But because my uncle was an architect, he encouraged me to try a construction-related course. I didn’t fully understand it at the time, but it turned out to be a great decision. That’s why I hope more girls consider this path — there are still very few women in the field, so there are many opportunities.”
Shirrah Kadwala, a student at Mnjiri C.D.S.S., reflected on the talk, saying:
“I feel happy, good, and encouraged. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. When I was younger, I used to say ndizakhala okolopa — I didn’t really know what that meant at the time. But now I’ve gained confidence. I take the speakers as my role models, and they also said they earn good salaries. Sometimes, people even change careers. Engineers have a very strong motivation.”
