Education leaders from Belgium have visited schools in Weston-super-Mare to see first-hand how a knowledge-rich curriculum is transforming learning for primary pupils.

Seven councillors advising the Flemish Minister for Education travelled to the town on 16–17 March 2026 to meet staff and pupils from the Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN), as well as the creators of the Opening Worlds programme.

The visit focused on how the humanities curriculum has been rolled out across nine primary schools in North Somerset, with a particular impact on Key Stage 2 pupils.

“The introduction of a knowledge-rich curriculum for humanities has been transformational. It has, indeed, opened worlds for our children” Penny Boardman, ELAN School Effectiveness Lead

Since introducing Opening Worlds in September 2023, schools have reported significant improvements in pupils’ ability to speak and write with confidence about complex topics.

Writing outcomes at the end of Year 6 have also improved year on year.

‘We were delighted to host this visit. It was an honour to be able to showcase highly effective teaching of such an amazing curriculum that brings teachers and children alike so much joy.’ Penny Boardman, ELAN School Effectiveness Lead

During the visit, delegates observed lessons and spoke with pupils about their learning, including topics such as the eruption of Vesuvius and the ancient city of Pompeii.

“In a discussion about other cities affected by Vesuvius's eruption, children were fascinated by archaeologists' discoveries, but this fascination only comes from having secure knowledge of what happened to Pompeii. I was having an educated conversation with educated people. Thanks for all that you do in ELAN.” Steve Mastin, Opening Worlds Author
