Mining Company Visits Mnjiri Secondary School for Careers Talk (By Phillip Nkhoma)
By Phillip Nkhoma, Malawi Correspondent
Last month students at Mnjiri Secondary School were visited by members of ZGC Company for a careers talk aimed at encouraging them to work hard and consider careers in mining.
One of the representatives said:
“We are here at Mnjiri Secondary School mainly for a careers talk to the students in order to motivate them so that others may become miners and stand on their own.”
She added: “Mining jobs are very important in our everyday life because they help to discover more treasures hidden in the soil, such as minerals.”
DON'T MISS:

Another representative, Faith, said:
“I have studied about rocks that are precious, which are included even in geography books that we use to learn in secondary schools, and I have some of them which will help you students to study them.”
A sales records manager also highlighted the practical value of the subject, saying:
“Mining is also a very important and beneficial job because it is where the knowledge we learn in geography about rocks is applied. The knowledge we gain should not end at school, but should be applied physically on the ground for better understanding.
“We offer training about mining at our company and, for one to take a mining certificate, they should be trained for three months. The fees are 150,000 per month. After training, if one wants to start his or her business about mining, we offer the starting materials.”
The deputy headteacher welcomed the visit, saying:
“Our students are very lucky because we receive different visitors who come to our school in order to encourage our students to work hard so that they can prosper.
“This makes the administration office happy and motivates teachers not to be discouraged when teaching.”
MORE FROM MALAWI:

Prosper, one of the students awarded by the visitors, said:
“I am very excited to receive a gift from visitors and this will motivate me to work extra hard and do well in my exams. I will always remember them because of this precious stone they have given to us as a gift for answering their questions.”
Teacher Mr Nkhoma added:
“I am very thankful for the visitors because they have taught me something that I never knew about rocks as a teacher, and they motivated me. I am thinking of going to them on holiday so that I can learn more from them.”
