My Work Experience Journey: The Difference Inclusive Opportunities Can Make

It was a real pleasure to speak at the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority Annual Conference and share my journey with such an inspiring audience.

In Year 10, I was fortunate to complete my work experience placement at my former primary school, an environment where I already felt comfortable and connected.

During the week, I supported Key Stage 1 pupils with their learning by communicating through my eye-gaze technology.

With the initial support of my secondary school teaching assistant, I quickly became more independent and confident in engaging directly with the children. I listened to pupils read, supported classroom activities and gained valuable insight into working in an educational setting while developing my communication skills.

In my final year at college, I was accepted onto the Supported Internship programme, which gave me valuable workplace experience and helped build my confidence.

I joined the interview panel for prospective social work students at Yeovil College and worked as a Learning Support Practitioner (LSP) within the Preparation for Life and Work classes.

Supporting students with more complex needs was especially meaningful, as I have always been passionate about helping others.

The internship made me feel fully included, valued and treated with equality and respect. The encouragement and support I received from lecturers, staff and my one-to-one assistant helped me develop my skills and prepare for future opportunities.

Speaking at the conference gave me the chance to highlight the importance of inclusive work experience and demonstrate how providing young people with disabilities the right opportunities can make a lasting difference.
