New Bee Project to Inspire Thousands of Children and Boost Local Wildlife

A bee project that will teach thousands of local children about wildlife and conservation has received a £12,000 grant from Bristol Airport.

FarmLink Education Ltd, based at Lower Stock Farm in Wrington, has used the funding from the Airport's Local Community Fund to install beehives, create a wildflower meadow and restore its raised-bed gardens.

The new areas will become part of FarmLink's education programme, giving children the chance to learn why bees and other pollinators are so important for food production and the natural environment.

FarmLink works with schools across Bristol, North Somerset and Somerset, welcoming thousands of pupils to the farm every year as well as delivering workshops and assemblies in classrooms.

Last year alone, the charity worked with more than 80 schools, delivering 112 farm visits, 226 workshops and 43 assemblies, reaching more than 30,000 pupils.

The new bee project is expected to help around 11,000 children each year learn more about bees, pollination and biodiversity.

Tim Ledbury, chief executive of FarmLink Education Ltd, said:

"The bee hives, wildflower meadow and raised beds will become an important part of every school visit, helping children understand the role pollinators play in protecting our environment.

"As well as teaching children on the farm, we've bought a mobile hive and created lesson plans so we can take the experience into schools."
