Drivers on Essex Regiment Way had an unexpected encounter last week — not with criminals, but with a family of swans on the loose.

Officers were called to the scene near Chelmsford following reports of two adult swans and their four young goslings wandering dangerously close to the busy road.

Thankfully, police were quick to respond and ensured no one — bird or human — got into a flap.

The swan family was safely guided away from traffic and back to a more suitable habitat.

Chief Inspector Jennifer Bliss praised the swift action of her team, saying:

“I’m pleased we were able to get this young family to safety from the side of a busy road. Fortunately, our officers are trained for a range of types of incidents, so didn’t have to wing it.

"I’m also grateful for the patience of all the drivers on the road at the time. Incidents like this could have led to someone spitting feathers, but everyone was really understanding.”

The Essex Police team reminded residents that, while their work often involves serious incidents, they’re always ready to respond — even when things turn a little fowl.
