School Pupils Tackled Maths Mysteries and Fibonacci Spirals for National Numeracy Day
By Schools Correspondent
Pupils at Mary Elton Primary School, in North Somerset, marked National Numeracy Day with a day of maths-themed activities designed to make learning fun and interactive.
The day began with children learning about inspirational female mathematicians during their VIPERS lessons before moving on to practical “no books” maths sessions in classrooms across the school.

Year 6 pupils explored Fibonacci numbers by turning the sequence into measurements to create a Fibonacci spiral and looking at how the pattern appears in nature.
Teachers said the task was challenging but pupils showed plenty of determination and teamwork throughout.

Year 5 children took part in discussions around “always, sometimes, never” maths statements before creating their own challenges for classmates to solve.
In the afternoon, pupils from Years 2 to 6 teamed up to solve a maths murder mystery involving the theft of the school’s “seagull defence system”.

Working in mixed-age groups, the children followed clues, eliminated suspects and eventually uncovered the culprit — with the suspects closely resembling members of staff.
Pupils also came dressed for the occasion, with the school thanking parents and carers for helping make the day extra special.
Staff also praised Miss Burrell for organising the event and creating the maths mystery challenge enjoyed by pupils across the school.
