UWE Bristol’s teacher training for educators working overseas has been given the highest possible rating after a government-backed inspection.

The International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) programme, now in its third year, earned a Grade 1 in an assessment commissioned by the Department for Education.

At the time, 102 trainees were completing the course online while teaching in schools abroad.

The iQTS qualification, launched in 2023, allows students to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), making them eligible to teach internationally and in England.

Julie Buckland, Associate Director in Education at UWE Bristol, said:

“We’re thrilled to have achieved this grade – it reflects the dedication, expertise and relentless hard work that goes into our Initial Teacher Education programmes.” She added, “A huge thank you goes to every UWE iQTS student past and present, to their schools and mentors, and to our incredible UWE iQTS team.”

Inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate praised UWE Bristol for the quality of its leadership, programme design, and mentoring.

Highlights included strong coordination between trainees, mentors, and tutors, effective progress tracking, and high-quality resources.

The inspection also involved school visits in Sweden, remote checks with trainees and mentors, and joint lesson observations.
