Volunteers and residents in Eling, near Southampton, have come together to clear and transform a neglected lane that had become a dumping ground for rubbish.

The area was previously strewn with fly-tipped waste, broken glass and discarded furniture, making it unsafe for children and dog walkers.

The clean-up was organised by local community group Common Earth Collective, formed by residents Izzy and Robyn after they spotted how badly the space had deteriorated.

With no external funding, the group relied on donations of time, tools and materials from local businesses and residents to clear the site and begin restoring it.

What was once an unused and neglected space has now been turned into a small community green area, planted with fruit and vegetables, wildflowers and insect habitats.

Children from Eling Infant School also helped by painting bug hotels, adding to the transformation of the site into a more welcoming environment for wildlife and residents.

Robyn, from Common Earth Collective, said the project showed what can be achieved when local people work together.

“The biggest achievement has been seeing the community come together to create something positive,” she said. “Neighbours are no longer strangers, and everyone chipped in, even when it was tough.”

The group say the project is only the beginning of their work to improve local green spaces and bring residents together.
