Weston-super-Mare Youth Council, a local organisation championing youth voices and funded by Weston Town Council, gathered at the YMCA Weston Youth Centre on the Bournville Estate last week, to begin its latest effort to help clean local streets and public spaces.

The determined group of volunteers litter-picked St John's Park, a valuable area of green space located between the edge of the estate and the surrounding railway lines.

The park is an important meeting place for young people in an area that has not always had enough facilities to meet the needs of its growing youth population.

The event, which was promoted on the Youth Council's Facebook and Instagram pages, ran from 2pm to 5pm. Volunteers worked through the warm summer weather to remove litter that had accumulated in the park and surrounding areas.

Without community action and continued maintenance, spaces such as St John's Park can quickly fall into decline, as has been seen in other neglected areas across Weston.

The Youth Council says it plans to continue its mission of helping to create safe, welcoming public spaces for local residents.

The organisation is always looking for young people aged 11 to 21 who want to contribute their skills and ideas to the community.

If you or someone you know would like to get involved, particularly during the upcoming summer months, joining the Youth Council could be a great way to make a positive difference locally.
