Bikers and Rugby Stars Team Up to Tackle Food Poverty
By Community Correspondent
A message of love and hope is on full display in Newtown this week as members of a local motorcycle group joined forces with the town’s rugby club to collect food parcels for The Salvation Army.
At Christmas, The Salvation Army is there for thousands of people, offering practical support, care and a powerful reminder that they are not alone.
Working together with The Salvation Army in Newtown the bikers and rugby players demonstrate that teamwork extends far beyond the pitch and the open road.
Samantha Jones is The Salvation Army’s Territorial Envoy running the church at Newtown. Samantha said:
“Last December we helped 290 families with food parcels or vouchers for food and we expect to be just as busy this year. We’re incredibly grateful to the Outlaw motorcyclists for riding to our assistance again. To have Newtown Rugby club as well this year means will be able to help even more people. We are so grateful that these two organisations have gone out of their way to support us.”

A spokesperson for the Mid-Wales chapter of the American Outlaws Association motorcycle group said they chose The Salvation Army for the work they do helping people who are struggling with cost-of-living pressures.
“This is our area, and we want to help with local issues by supporting local charities. With the kind support of businesses in Newtown, we’ve completed another food drive for the second-year running, and we look forward to making this an annual tradition.”
Newtown rugby club asked its players, coaches, volunteers and families of those connected to the club to donate food, which will then be handed over to The Salvation Army.
Paul Herdman, youth coach at Newtown RFC, said:
“A rugby club is a family that stretches far beyond the touchline. This Christmas, we know some members of our community face a difficult winter, and we want to alleviate that through the strength of our rugby family. We’re proud to show that the spirit of Newtown RFC is about caring for one another when it matters most.”
The Salvation Army in Newtown has also launched its Christmas Present Appeal.
The charity shop in Market Street will be collecting donations of gift vouchers for local stores such as Charlies, No1 High Street and Argos. Samantha Jones added:
“At The Salvation Army this kind of love is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not just what we believe – it’s belief in action. From a food parcel in the midst of a crisis to a Christmas present for a child who might otherwise go without. We’re here to show that love is alive, active and near.”
