Beloved Bristol Zoo Project Silverback Gorilla Jock Honoured in Heartfelt Public Exhibition Celebrating His Legacy
By Josh Bell, Charities Correspondent
There was a truly heartwarming atmosphere at Bristol Zoo Project as hundreds of visitors gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the much-loved silverback gorilla, Jock.
The special public exhibition paid tribute to one of Bristol's most iconic and cherished animals, drawing visitors from across the region to remember a gorilla who captivated generations.
Jock, who spent more than two decades at the zoo, was renowned for his gentle nature, strong leadership and larger-than-life personality.
As one of the UK's oldest silverback gorillas, Jock played a significant role in conservation and breeding programmes for the critically endangered western lowland gorilla, helping to secure the future of his species while becoming a favourite among visitors and staff alike.

When Good News Post's Charities Correspondent visited the exhibition, it coincided with feeding time, offering guests a wonderful opportunity to watch the resident gorilla troop enjoying their day.

Hundreds of people stood together sharing memories and admiration while observing the six gorillas now living within the impressive African Forest habitat, including four females and two males.
The exhibition itself was a moving and emotional tribute, featuring an incredible collection of public-submitted artwork, photographs, paintings, drawings, personal messages and treasured memories.
Contributions from visitors, supporters, artists and zoo staff highlighted the profound impact Jock had on so many lives.
Among the touching tributes displayed were messages including:
"Jock – A 43-year-old gorilla who was a treasured icon to the Zoo."
and
"A pleasure to work with Jock in the final two years of his life."
Visitors spent time reading the heartfelt messages, admiring the artwork and sharing stories of their own encounters with the beloved silverback, creating a powerful sense of community and remembrance throughout the day.

The newly showcased gorilla enclosure also received widespread praise from guests. Surrounded by beautiful flowers, lush planting and tranquil water features, the habitat provides a safe and enriching environment where the gorillas can relax both individually and as a family group.
The expansive African Forest habitat has been carefully designed to create more natural surroundings, offering opportunities for climbing, exploration and social interaction.
More than simply an exhibition, the event served as a powerful reminder of the connection between people, wildlife and conservation.
Throughout the day, visitors reflected on the lasting influence Jock had on generations of zoo-goers, staff members and volunteers.
A statement displayed as part of the tribute perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion:
"We please ask for you to take this time to celebrate his life. Jock was a fantastic silverback, and I know many of you have very fond memories of him."
Everyone at Good News Post hopes those who attended enjoyed this very special occasion. It was a privilege to witness such a heartfelt celebration honouring a truly unforgettable gorilla whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Thank you, Jock, for the memories, the inspiration and the joy you brought to so many. Your impact on Bristol Zoo Project, conservation efforts and countless visitors will never be forgotten.
