First Parts of King Charles III Coast Path Opens on Isle of Wight

By Nature Correspondent
Two new stretches of the King Charles III England Coast Path have officially opened on the Isle of Wight, offering scenic coastal walks and better public access.
Part of a national project to create a continuous path around the entire English coastline, the trail will eventually stretch 2,700 miles, making it the longest managed coastal walking route in the world.
New Sections Now Open
- 12 miles: From Chilton Chine to Colwell Chine (south-west and west coast)
- 2.8 miles: From Gurnard Luck to West Cowes Chain Ferry (north coast)
These new paths include legal rights for the trail to "roll back" with coastal erosion, protecting access and investment for the future.
Chilton Chine to Colwell Chine
This 12-mile stretch features clifftop views, peaceful beaches, and landmarks like Compton Bay, Tennyson Down, and The Needles. The route passes through Sites of Special Scientific Interest and offers access to popular spots like The Needles Landmark Attraction, Alum Bay, and Totland Bay.

Gurnard Luck to West Cowes
This shorter section provides a relaxed seaside walk, starting at Gurnard Luck and ending at the Cowes Chain Ferry. Highlights include Gurnard Beach, the Esplanade Walk, and Cowes Harbour.
New steps, boardwalks, and gravel paths have been installed through Lynda’s Wood, thanks to Natural England funding.
Landowner Richard Murphy, who planted over 500 trees in memory of his late wife Lynda, said he hopes the woods become a lasting tribute to her vision.
“This is a fantastic improvement for our community,” said Cllr Paul Fuller, vice-chair of Gurnard Parish Council.
“A heartfelt thank you to Richard Murphy, whose dedication has truly gone above and beyond.”
Bringing Nature and Tourism Together
Allison Potts, deputy area director for Natural England, said:
“These improved stretches of path take in some of the best views on the Isle of Wight... With additional access rights, we hope it will continue to give people the chance to get out and enjoy nature, as well as continue to bring visitors to the island.”
