Walliscote Primary School – a school community representing 47 spoken languages – met at St Paul’s Church in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset in an event hosted by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq.
Their choir, conducted by school Headteacher Shelley Flanagan, opened the service with the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City, symbolising the rich cultural tapestry of the town and the way music continues to unite people from many backgrounds.
The event brought the whole town together including homeless charities.
The evening brought together civic leaders, local organisations, musicians, schoolchildren and residents from across Weston-super-Mare.
The service was led by the Vicar of St Paul’s, the Reverend Craig Philbrick, with contributions from the Lighthouse Community Choir, Walliscote Primary School Choir, and a specially formed Festive Orchestra.
Readings of Scripture, poetry, and prayers were delivered by community representatives including Somewhere to Go, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, YMCA Dulverton Group, and Assistant Bishop Michael Langrish.
A collection was taken for the work of St Paul’s Church and local charity Somewhere to Go, which provides meals, support, and vital services for vulnerable people across the town.
HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq, said:
“Tonight we witnessed the very best of Weston-super-Mare — a community enriched by many cultures, coming together as one in the spirit of hope and goodwill. The voices of the children reminded us that our diversity is a profound strength, and that unity is something we build every day through kindness and understanding.
"It has been an honour to host this celebration and to stand alongside so many organisations and individuals dedicated to supporting and uplifting our town.”
Vicar Craig Philbrick said:
“It’s was such a joy see so many incredible children playing such a key place in our community Christmas carol celebration.”
Headteacher Shelley Flanagan said:
"Walliscote Primary School choir have been rehearsing very hard over the past few weeks. The children were so excited to perform in such a large space and to an audience of that size. At the school we believe it is really important that the children are part of their local community.
"The choir will be singing at care homes and the Sovereign Centre over the next few weeks. The children were incredible – such brave and talented performers! It was an immensely proud moment for our school community".
Guests enjoyed refreshments provided by The Bakehouse, and the service concluded with the National Anthem and a cheerful rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas from the orchestra.
St Paul’s Church extends warm thanks to all volunteers, musicians, schools, supporters and attendees who made the event possible.
