People in Weston-super-Mare can now more easily find information about mental health support after plaques with QR codes were installed on benches across the town.

The plaques, which have been added to benches in prominent locations including the seafront promenade, provide information about local and national support services for anyone who may be struggling with their mental health.

Each plaque includes a QR code linking people to advice and support organisations, including the Samaritans and a range of local services. Information is also provided about what to do in an emergency, including when to call 999.

The project has been delivered through a partnership involving charity SAFE South West, North Somerset Council, local organisations and emergency services.

The launch comes during Men's Health Week, which aims to raise awareness of physical and mental health issues and encourage people to seek support when they need it.

Councillor Jenna Ho Marris, North Somerset Council's Cabinet Member for Homes and Health, said:

"Men's Health Week is a timely reminder that it's okay to talk and to reach out for support. By adding these plaques to locations across Weston, we're creating simple, visible opportunities for people to pause and find help if they need it.
"We want everyone to know they are not alone. The mental health support benches mean we can connect people to trusted mental health support services quickly and easily, in places they already feel comfortable."

Similar benches have already been installed in towns and cities across the South West, including Taunton, Glastonbury, Barnstaple and Plymouth.

North Somerset Council said it is now looking at additional locations where further mental health support benches could be installed.
