New Book Nook gives children a welcoming place to read at Thirsk station

Children waiting for trains at Thirsk Station now have somewhere to sit down with a good book.
A new children’s Book Nook has opened at the station, with a selection of books and comfortable seating for young passengers to enjoy while they wait.
The space was officially opened by author Amelia Tait, who grew up in North Yorkshire.
It is one of two Book Nooks donated by Hachette UK through its Raising Readers initiative. A second space has also opened at Malton Station.
The books are there for children to read while at the station and are not available to take home or swap.
Amelia visited Thirsk to open the Book Nook and celebrate the release of her first children’s book, Lily Tripp: Diary of an Accidental Time Traveller. The book was recently chosen as a national Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month.
The new space has already proved popular, with station staff hearing from parents whose children have enjoyed looking through the books while waiting for their trains.

Amelia said: “Having grown up in North Yorkshire, I’m especially thrilled to see their partnership with The Reading Agency and Hachette’s Raising Readers initiative, helping make books more accessible to local families in community spaces.”
Hachette UK was introduced to TransPennine Express through its partnership with The Reading Agency for the National Year of Reading.
The Book Nooks follow the train operator’s support for the Summer Reading Challenge and give children another chance to pick up a book and enjoy some reading time while travelling.
