Jackie Richards, the first-ever female Club Captain of Mendip Spring Golf & Country Club in Somerset, is leveraging her leadership role to help save the 36-year-old inspirational local hospice, Weston Hospicecare.

The charity, which provides essential end-of-life care to residents of Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset, has been hit hard by recent budget changes, adding hundreds of thousands of pounds in unexpected costs due to an increase in national insurance employer contributions.

It was already struggling financially, even before the budget, and in response, Jackie has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign.

She is urging business leaders and the community to support the hospice by sponsoring “The Big One - Weston Hospicecare Charity Day” on Friday 27th June 2025, aiming to gather support well in advance, with sign-ups encouraged.

Weston Hospicecare, which receives only 18% of its funding from government sources, depends largely on donations to continue providing compassionate care to people with life-limiting conditions.

To support this mission, Jackie is inviting sponsors to contribute £500 per hole, which includes entry for a team of four in the event’s popular golf competition.

Sponsors will also benefit from on-course branding and recognition in the event program.

The tournament participants will enjoy a meal at the clubhouse, followed by a charity auction featuring unique prizes.

Jackie is appealing to business leaders, CEOs, and entrepreneurs to “step up and make a difference in our community.”
“The recent budget has been catastrophic for charities like Weston Hospicecare, which were already struggling for funds,” Jackie said.
“This is a critical moment for leaders everywhere—CEOs, entrepreneurs, and self-employed business owners—to show that we can make a real impact, not only in our local areas but across communities.”

Weston Hospicecare has provided free, essential palliative and end-of-life care for over 35 years, yet it now finds itself at a financial crossroads.

The hospice’s latest report highlights a rise in patient demand by 11% and a surge in daily operating costs by 15%, making its funding model increasingly unsustainable.

In response, Jackie has set a bold example, organising the charity day as a call to action for local and national business leaders to sponsor holes, offer donations, and pledge support.

Each sponsorship includes a team entry, breakfast bap and coffee on arrival, spot prizes, a post-game meal, and recognition throughout the event materials.

“The hospice needs us now more than ever,” Jackie emphasised.
“Every contribution counts toward keeping this essential service available for our loved ones in their most critical time.”

Jackie hopes the local business community will respond enthusiastically to her initiative, setting a precedent for similar campaigns across the UK to support other hospices facing similar financial pressures.
