RAF veteran Harry Hitch has celebrated his 100th birthday with family, friends and fellow residents at a High Wycombe care home.

Harry, who served as an engineer in the RAF after the Second World War, enjoyed two birthday parties at Royal Star & Garter. A family gathering was held on June 14, followed by a celebration at the home on his birthday the next day.

Born in Thornton Heath, London, on June 15, 1926, Harry joined the RAF for National Service and served from 1946 to 1948.

After leaving the forces, he worked as a design engineer, spending much of his career designing aircraft parts. Later, he helped his children run the family's frozen food business, which had shops in Hazlemere and Princes Risborough.

Harry and his wife Peggy had three children and he is now a grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was diagnosed with glaucoma in his 50s and gradually lost his sight.

Despite this, he continued to live independently for many years with support from Blind Veterans UK before moving to Royal Star & Garter in March this year.

Family members joined him again for his birthday celebrations, which included live music from singer Nicky Fisher. High Wycombe Mayor Imran Hussain also visited to wish him a happy birthday.

Former RAF pilot Tony Davies celebrated his 90th birthday with an emotional reunion with the de Havilland Vampire jet he flew in 1961.

Harry's daughter Brenda said:

"Dad has had a wonderful time celebrating his birthday with his family and with his friends at Royal Star & Garter. I'd like to thank the staff who helped make it such a special and memorable day for him and for his family."
Speaking about the care home, she added: "It's a beautiful building with wonderful amenities, but it's the staff that make it an amazing Home. Everyone is so friendly, nothing is too much trouble and they keep you informed. I know Dad is in a Home where he's loved and well-looked after."
