Sheffield Serves Up UK-Leading Pickleball Expansion Across City Parks
By Community Correspondent
Sheffield has strengthened its reputation as a leader in grassroots sport after rolling out the UK’s largest network of outdoor pickleball courts across its parks.
The fast-growing game, which blends tennis, badminton and table tennis, is now easier than ever to access thanks to a major expansion led by Sheffield City Council in partnership with Courtside and Sheffield Pickleball Club.
New marked courts have been introduced across the city, including at Graves Park, Millhouses Park, Hillsborough Parkand several other green spaces, bringing the total outdoor offer to unprecedented levels.
The initiative is designed to meet rising demand while keeping participation affordable and inclusive, with a mix of free sessions and low-cost pay-and-play options available across venues.
Local organisers say the expansion is already helping more residents get active, with beginner-friendly sessions and community play driving interest across all ages.

Councillor Marieanne Elliot said the project shows how partnerships can open up new opportunities for physical activity, while Courtside’s Juliette Green highlighted the strong social and health benefits of racket sports.
Free sessions continue at selected parks, while other venues offer two-hour play for a small fee, bookable through the Sheffield Pickleball platform.
