Southwark Council has added eight new temporary modular homes in Bermondsey to support people who are homeless or sleeping rough.

The Solohaus homes were gifted by homebuilder The Hill Group, following a similar successful project in Haringey. These homes expand Southwark’s Housing First programme, which helps rough sleepers secure long-term housing and support.

The council has run Housing First since 2017, supporting 70 residents, and it’s recognised as one of the most effective approaches to ending homelessness.

Funded through the Single Homeless Accommodation Programme, with a £224,889 Mayor’s capital grant and £960,000 for resident support, the modular homes provide safe, fully furnished spaces while residents are helped to move into permanent accommodation.

Modular homes can be built in eight to ten weeks, transforming empty sites quickly into comfortable, welcoming homes.

Designed with leading homelessness charities, the homes feature thoughtful layouts, natural light, storage, and independence for residents.

Southwark currently has over 20,000 people on its council home waiting list and around 4,000 households in temporary accommodation.

Cllr Sarah King, Leader of Southwark Council, said:

“These temporary homes are a lifeline for people experiencing homelessness. By working with The Hill Group, we’re delivering safe, high-quality homes that give dignity, hope, and a path to permanent housing.”

Andy Hill OBE, Founder of The Hill Group, said:

“We’re delighted to hand over these SoloHaus homes. They provide stability and a fresh start, and we hope residents find a safe, supportive environment to rebuild their lives.”
