The King Alfred School Academy continued its annual Reverse Advent tradition this year by making a generous donation to the Highbridge Area Food Bank.
Several trolleys full of food and essentials were delivered, showing the school’s commitment to helping those in need this Christmas.
Sixth Form students played a key role in the collection.
Every morning, rain or shine, they stood at the school gates to gather donations and helped organise everything ready for delivery.
195kg of donations were collected - equivalent to 9 emergency family parcels. The school also raised an impressive £2,608.25 for the food bank. The school’s efforts were further boosted by the generosity of the Co‑op, which added to the food supplies.
Head Teacher Mr Milford explained why this tradition matters:
“It supports our community and all of the people in our area, including students in our school, over the festive period.”
Andy Ballard, a volunteer at the food bank, praised the students’ efforts:
“It’s incredible to see such generosity from the young people in our community. This donation will go a long way in helping us provide meals and essentials for families during the festive period.” These donations are extremely important in helping the local community, particularly as a third of them go to children.
The Highbridge Area Food Bank supports around 60 people every day and relies on donations for more than 90% of its supplies.
Collection points can be found across Burnham‑on‑Sea and Highbridge, including Tesco, Asda, and the Methodist Church.
This year’s contribution from TKASA is a great example of how schools can come together to make a real difference in their local community.
