Weston-super-Mare-based Entrepreneur Andrew Scott to Take the TEDx Stage in Bristol This Week
By Business Editor
Weston-super-Mare entrepreneur, mentor, and community champion Andrew Scott will deliver his first-ever TED Talk on 8th November at We The Curious in Bristol.
His talk — which will be broadcast globally on the official TED platform next March — promises to be one of the most powerful of his career.
Andrew said: “Ideas worth spreading’ is the mantra of TED Talks.
“I’ve been in awe of speakers like Simon Sinek, Seth Godin and Professor Brené Brown for years. So to step into that famous red circle — and share my story about the power of purpose — is an absolute honour.”
His talk, titled “Purpose: The Power to Rise Again”, will explore how finding a true sense of purpose can help people overcome even the hardest adversities — from trauma and loss to failure and burnout — and live the lives they truly deserve.
At just four years old, Andrew survived a terrorist bomb in Belfast — an early brush with mortality that shaped his outlook on life and planted the first seed of resilience that would later define his career.
Though now recognised across the UK as a respected business leader and mentor, Andrew’s roots remain firmly planted in Weston-super-Mare. It was on Weston’s windswept beach, two decades ago, that his story of recovery and self-belief began.
After his business collapsed and debt piled high, Andrew found himself sitting in a clapped-out BMW with £100,000 owed, having lost his home and with two young sons to support.
“I was done,” he recalls. “Broke, broken, and ready to give up.”
But in that moment, he remembered a simple formula he had written down in a notebook — Purpose, Plan, Execute.
It became a mantra that guided every decision he made from that day forward.
“Those three words became the message to myself,” he explains. “They got me out of the darkest place and eventually became the foundation of Purplex, the business I went on to build and grow.”
“I’m delighted to share this story on a wider stage — because I know it gives hope to so many people. I’ve lost count of the number of entrepreneurs who’ve thanked me for sharing my journey and giving them belief again.”
For more than a decade, Andrew has also been highly active in the community.
He has mentored local students — launching the Sir Richard Branson, Alan Sugar Business and Dragon’s Den Competitions at Priory School to teach enterprise, confidence, and creativity to pupils as young as 11.
He is also a trustee of the local homeless charity Somewhere to Go, using his platform to raise awareness, funds, and hope for people struggling on the margins of society.
Andrew is no stranger to the national stage. He built and sold Business Leader, one of the UK’s leading entrepreneur magazines, to near-billionaire tycoon Richard Harpin.
Through his company, the Ascot Group, based near Worle Train Station, Andrew has created hundreds of jobs and a workplace culture that prioritises kindness and wellbeing — complete with office dogs, yoga sessions, and regular team celebrations.
Beyond the boardroom, he has mentored more than 1,000 people across the UK and regularly speaks at major events, including the Global Women’s Summit in London.
“This isn’t about me,” he says. “It’s about showing others that no matter how far you’ve fallen, you can always bounce back stronger than before — and purpose is the power.”
