STAND and French NGO Join Forces to Expand Prosthetic Support in Africa
By Charities Correspondent
STAND has announced a new formal partnership with French NGO Nav’Solidaire, aimed at increasing access to high-quality prosthetic limbs for amputees across Africa.
The collaboration brings together two specialist organisations working in the same field, with the aim of improving efficiency, reducing costs and lowering environmental impact while scaling up support for people who currently have little or no access to prosthetic care.
Millions of amputees across Africa are still unable to access prosthetic limbs or rehabilitation services, and both charities say closer cooperation is needed to increase reach and impact.
Under the new agreement, Nav’Solidaire will take responsibility for refurbishing donated prosthetic legs from around the world, supported by a network of volunteers.

The organisation will also oversee transport logistics, including the use of sailing vessels to move components from Normandy to West Africa, including Senegal and The Gambia.
STAND will continue to focus on collecting prosthetic donations through its global network, as well as developing long-term clinic capacity across sub-Saharan Africa.
This includes training, equipment provision and counselling support, with a focus on both physical and emotional rehabilitation.

By working together, the two organisations aim to reduce duplication and shift towards a more collaborative model within the NGO sector, with the shared goal of helping more people with limb differences regain independence.
Tom Williams OBE, founder of STAND, said:
“We’ve been friends with Nav’Solidaire for some time, so it made sense to work more closely rather than duplicate efforts. They bring strong logistics and sailing expertise, while we bring our network and clinic development work across Africa.”
Antoine Michel, President of Nav’Solidaire, said: “As an amputee myself, I set up Nav’Solidaire with friends to support others who don’t have access to care. We share the same mission, and this partnership allows us to scale that work more effectively.”
